Introducing the nRF52 and BMD-300


On Oct. 5, Nordic Semiconductor kicks off the Global Tech Tour to announce the release of their latest system-on-chip, the nRF52832. The tour is an opportunity for embedded application development engineers to engage with the latest in Bluetooth Smart technology. Each seminar features a walkthrough of the nRF52 and an afternoon of software examples from the nRF52 SDK. The presentations are free (though registration is required) and each attendee will receive a free SDK.

The nRF52 is the basis of our newest module, the BMD-300. As this series continues over the next few weeks, we’ll examine the new features of the nRF52 and the BMD-300 more in-depth. We think you’ll be just as excited about them as we are.

Nordic is revolutionizing Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity with the nRF52, an ultralow power SoC that’s ideal for Bluetooth Smart ANT and 2.4GHz ultralow power wireless application. The chipset, which is the basis of Rigado’s new BMD-300 BLE module, is based on a 32-bit ARM® Cortex™-M4 CPU with FPU and 512kB + 64kB RAM that operates at 64 MHz. The SoC’s 2.4GHz transceiver supports proprietary 2.4GHz protocol stack, Bluetooth Smart and ANT.

The nRF52 promises new possibilities in low-power development. It boasts high speed and ultralow power with an MCU that can take on complicated algorithms in real time and a processing speed of 64 MHz. The chipset’s new peripherals will allow for more centrally integrated functions – for example, the chip incorporates an I2S bus that allows for the use of AudioCodec, and NFC pairing capability promises a safer, more convenient user experience.

The nRF52 incorporates the same architecture and mature SDK as the nRF51, making for an easy, low-risk transition to the new chipset.
